I took a risk to buy a new pricey product, and disappointed!
    1 Star
I took a risk to buy a new pricey product, and disappointed!
I decided to buy ASUS Lyra trio mesh system because I previously had a positive experience with ASUS products. Unfortunately, ASUS Lyra trio was very disappointing! This is perhaps the worst pricy mesh system you'd ever find in stores. Not quite sure if the product normally has many bugs or I might be got a defective pack. However, I will list the couple of issues I faced with this product.First of all, each node has a very poor range of coverage in comparing to other devices like Lynksis Velop. So you can only place all nodes very close to each other. I had to connect one node with Ethernet cable, that node turned into a constant green light. I tried to search for all instructions on ASUS website, I didn't find anything explaining what the constant green light means? It only says that when the device has completely booted and connected to the internet it will show a constant cyan color! However, this constant green disappeared later after I had to reset the node and never appeared again. Later, I could see a constant red light that gets change constantly after some ‘blue’ blinking lights to constant cyan then ‘blue’ blinking and constant red .. so on. It doesn’t understand that node is connected to a cable. The node still transmitting WiFi and you can connect to the Internet and local Lan, but when I move to another room that has a Lyra trio node connected with WiFi to the main node, I will lose signal and then get full signal again! So no benefit from the MESH!Another annoying issue is, it takes around 5-10 minutes for each node to boot and after connecting them to the main node through the app, it will be a nightmare if you want to change the location of any added nodes. You will wait until the long boot finish, then even if you see the cyan color, the whole WiFi system will just freeze. You will see full network coverage on your mobile, but will not be able to surf the web or connect to the local network devices. So, the only option there is to reset the node and reconnect it again! through the app as a new node, I see in other mesh brands' ads where you can just unplug your node power, move anywhere in the home and plug it to power easily and you are all good. This is not going to be so easy with ASUS Lyra trio! The last issue is, in my existing network, I use ASUS RT-AC68U router. I have a 50 MB internet connection speed from my ISP coming from a sperate modem that is connected to my RT-AC68U. Using SpeedTest on my iPhone, I get 50 MB internet speed on results with no issues. However, when I first tried the Lyra trio, I removed the RT-AC68U and connected the Lyra trio to my modem so it became my router. When testing with SpeedTest on iPhone, I could only get 30-36 MB of internet speed! So, I had to return back making RT-AC68U as my router, turning-off its Wifi and making Lyra trio working on access point mode. I could then get 50 MB of internet speed in results if I'm very close to the nodes that are connected with Ethernet Cable. If I'm just 14 ft away, the speed will drop to 18-20 MB, even if I'm very close to the second node that is wirelessly connected to the main node.**Update** Just forgot to mention the issues with the appHad to mention this issues too! The Lyra app is another nightmare! The map of nodes keeps changing when you don’t change anything and sometimes showing unexplained signs. On the other hand, when I change the place of one node, the change doesn’t appear on the map !! There are also many bugs as it takes very long time to show the list of connected devices at the bottom and in many times the buttons to edit or remove for all/some nodes just disappear! It also sometimes doesn’t allow you to type using the keyboard if you want to change the name of a node, no matter where you touch. When you are connecting a new node, after choosing the name of a node, a message saying “Operation failed” appears. You then need to choose the name again and re-click the button to work.

This product has plenty of shortcomings but I’m giving it five stars because I can’t imagine a consumer grade product at this price point being any better.

I live in a long, narrow, 6k square foot house that I couldn’t come close to covering even with an extra ISP-provided router/WAP combo. The main router for the house is at the far end...more on that later.

I fumbled through the setup and found myself pretty frustrated by the bandwidth, latency, and reliability of the network...especially at the far end (3rd WAP). At this point I was doing all wireless backhaul (mesh is a misnomer) and at the third WAP, even though the software indicated there was adequate connectivity, bandwidth was under 1mbps and latency was bad too.

At my wits end, I decided to do copper (Ethernet backhaul). I’m not a networking guy by any means, but I manage Cisco networking projects in the public sector, so I have my arms wrapped around the basics.

To do this, I bought an unmanaged gigabit (that’s key...Fast Ethernet probably won’t work) switch. My topography looks like this: ISP-provided router connects to main Lyra AP by copper in the Lyra’s WAN/LAN port. Gigabit switch connects to main Lyra AP in its LAN port. Second AP is connected to the gigabit switch in its WAN/LAN port. 3rd AP is wirelessly connected (but that will change once I can get a low voltage wiring guy out here to run some cat6 for me). I have great coverage all over the house and even the third AP is getting 25+ mbps up and down with relatively low latency.

Long story short: if you’re having issues already, or a similar layout to me, I’d recommend doing Ethernet backhaul using a gigabit desktop switch and flat cat6 cable so you can hide it under rugs.

So I bought this for my home, its two stories and its not worth it. The system is unreliable. Day 1 I set up the three lyra's (Office, My Bedroom, and my Brothers Bedroom) The one in the office is where the Modem is. I have 50 down and 10 up (not great) but it works for me pretty well. So while we were setting them up the app worked decently, it was easy to connect and it working on the first night. All 3 were set up in under an hour which is nice and efficient. The issue came day 2 in the afternoon. I came downstairs to see why the wifi was buggy and the primary lyra in the office showed no connection. Remember that this is plugged into the modem with a NEW Cat5e cable. So I put on a different cable and unplugged it and plugged it back in, it started to work. I did a stream with my buddy and the system was fine but after that I went to watch a livestream and it went from 40 down to 5 down then to 0 down but still 5- 7 up. If the main would ever go down the the other lyra's will go down as well. The system is fast and responsive but until the reliability and connection issues can be fixed this will be a 1 star review and experience. If ASUS comes out with a V.2 that will be way better then what it is now, then we could have something here. I originally bought these over the google wifi since the lyras have a tri-band and not a dual-band wifi system. But I digress if yours work as advertised then I would be happy to hear your experiences but until it can take on a lot at one it wont work in a studio and big home space with 20 or so devices on the network. I would say if you think it would work for you then try them out the design is sleek and modern but the performance is just not there right now for a reliable standpoint. If you buy one good luck and ASUS hopefully you can take all the responses and make V2 better then V1. If these can work like the google wifi's but have tri-band then tech enthusiasts will pick y'all over google. Good luck!

My house is a sprawling ranch style that had been added onto both ends and my router didn't reach either end of the house well. It is great for stationary devices like my desktop computer, TV, PlayStation, etc. My computer on the far end of my house went from barely getting signal if at all, to pulling down 120 mbps.

My phones and tablets are another story. It is not entirely seamless and my signal drops out sometimes as I walk from one end of the house to the other. This can be a nuisance since I use WiFi calling with no cell signal at my house.

Installation was easy and the app worked well enough for me.

This is the best WiFi system on the market now. No doubt. This set supports cable connect between nodes, so it's 3x3 WiFi could be fully utilized for connected devices. companion app works just fine, setup is easy, works with fios modem. I do have a fios extender, but the speed is slower than Lyra trio. I place first in basement with Fios, setup second in 1F living room, I pull eth cable from basement to living room, 3rd at window to yard. about 1300 sq ft each floor. basically every corner could have enough wifi connection. I also tried the 3rd node connect to 2nd wirelessly, it worked, seems this mesh could have kind of hybrid mode? I was considering to have the linksys one, however a little bit pricey, so I have this one, and now just works fine. worth it.
